Education Voters joins a Campaign for Better Schools, a coalition committed to reforming the way New York City schools are governed when Mayoral Control comes up for re-authorization in June 2009. This coalition of over 25 education advocacy and community based organizations are demanding a stronger voice from parents, students and stakeholders, greater accountability and transparency and stronger checks and balances.Over the next five months, the campaign will seek to provide a platform for citizens’ involvement in the mayoral control debate.
Over a million children attend NYC public schools and most are not meeting the state and city academic standards.Only 52.2 percent of students graduate within four years and for students who graduate and go on to college, less than 1/3 are considered to be college ready.Mayoral Control has not turned into increased graduation rates particularly in communities of colors.Instead, students who were already achieving have continued to succeed.
The Campaign for Better Schools seeks to improve mayoral control to make our schools work better for all children, families and communities.
The Campaign for Better Schools believes that mayoral control:
has not delivered the student achievement results that were promised, or that have been broadly advertised and celebrated;
has failed to provide adequate and appropriate learning opportunities for all students; and
has locked students, parents, and teachers out of the decisions that affect the quality of schooling our city’s public school students receive.
