Message from Executive Director
This Election Day, we not only saw historic change in Washington, but we also saw historic change right here in New York. For the first time in over 40 years, the Democrats will now control the State Senate. While the issue of public school education is neither a Democratic nor Republican issue, we believe a Democratic-led Senate will work hard to turn around decades of underfunding public schools and make the kind of systemic changes needed to give every child the opportunity of an excellent education.
The two seats that were pivotal to the change in Senate leadership were:
·Joe Addabbo’s victory over incumbent Serphin Maltese in Queens (57.5% – 42.5%)
·Brian Foley’s victory over 36 year incumbent Caesar Trunzo on Long Island (58% - 41%)
Education Voters’ political action committee, NY EdPAC endorsed both candidates and supported them financially and encouraged our friends to do the same. We are pleased to have supported these candidates and look forward to working together to transform public education.
NY EdPAC also endorsed in additional races where incumbents showed a strong record of supporting public education or in races where we believed challengers would do better than incumbents. (For a full list of our endorsements, click here).
Winning elections is sweet, but it’s only the first step. We now need to hold our elected officials accountable for creating quality public education for all New York children – we hope you’ll join us!
