Education Voters Statement on Governor’s State of the State Address

January 7, 2009 – New York Governor David Paterson delivered his State of the State address. Governor Paterson called for government leaders to ‘have the courage to balance our budget as well as our priorities.’ He proclaimed, ‘we must sacrifice for the future, but this must be a shared sacrifice.’ Yet he is attempting to balance the budget by overburdening hard-working families and cutting school aid and other critical services while not asking New York’s highest income earners to pay their fair share. Although New York’s economic crisis is unprecedented, we believe that we must find creative solutions to protect the gains we have made to ensure that our neediest schools and students receive equitable and adequate resources. Governor Paterson is right, it is our time to lead and we must continue our commitment to invest in our children and prepare them for success in the knowledge economy of the 21st century,” said Glynda C. Carr, Executive Director of Education Voters of New York.
