New York City — The League of Education Voters of America (LEVA), a national issue advocacy organization dedicated to engaging voters in the fight for fair funding for public schools, today announced the launch of a major television advertising campaign in New York City and Westchester County urging Senator Serphin Maltese (R-Queens) and Senator Nick Spano (R-Yonkers) to fight for a fair funding formula for New York state’s public schools.
LEVA is the parent organization of NY EdPAC. On February 22nd, NY EdPAC released a list of New York State Senators who were blocking billions of dollars in education aid for New York state public schools.
The two ads, both entitled “The Clock is Ticking”, were produced by KnickerbockerSKD and urge voters in Queens and Westchester to call on their respective Senators to step up and deliver a major increase in public education aid in next year’s state budget.
The ads cost over $200,000 and will run extensively on Brooklyn-Queens cable and Westchester cable. The ads began running today and are scheduled to run through the end of March in an effort to engage parents in the Senate’s deliberations over the budget.
“With another budget deadline fast approaching these ads are meant to tell voters and Senate Republicans that the clock is ticking and time is running out to fix New York’s broken school funding formula,” stated Elizabeth Sullivan, Executive Director of the League of Education Voters.
“Instead of leaving the fate of New York’s school children to three men a room, these ads are the beginning of an effort to bring thousands of parents and taxpayers into the process,” stated Sullivan.
Sullivan noted that the ads are aimed at a statewide funding solution. “This fight is not just about New York City – this is about how we guarantee that every child across New York State gets the education they deserve. Senator Bruno is trying to make this a fight between New York City and the rest of the state – but parents in the suburbs and upstate won’t be fooled. They know that a real solution to CFE means more funding for children all across New York State.”
