New York — NY EdPAC and the League of Education Voters of America today hailed the election of Andrea Stewart Cousins and re-election of Dave Valesky to the New York State Senate. NY EdPAC endorsed both candidates and spent a combined $600,000 in support of their elections. NY EdPAC ran the single largest independent expenditure effort in New York State legislative races in 2006. The NY EdPAC effort included television ads, direct mail and targeted get-out-the-vote calls and canvassing to likely pro-education voters.
“Yesterday voters in Westchester and Central New York rejected Joe Bruno and the Senate Republican majority’s attempts to shortchange public schools and property tax payers across New York,” stated Beth Sullivan, Executive Director of NY EdPAC and the League of Education Voters.
In addition to a massive independent expenditure campaign in both districts, NY EdPAC spent the year educating parents and property tax payers about the candidates and the issues. In March, NY EdPAC spent over $250,000 to encourage the Senate GOP majority to increase funding for public education in the state budget. At the time Senate Majority Leader Joe Bruno lashed out at the ad campaign and called the Court of Appeals’ decision to fairly fund public schools, “complete lunacy.”
Polling conducted by NY EdPAC throughout the 2006 campaign consistently placed public education at the top of voter’s priority lists in the 35th and 49th State Senate Districts.
EdPAC’s campaign in New York State was managed by BerlinRosen Public Affairs.
